When you visit New Orleans, you’ll be tempted to say Nola, as in, “Oh, I love Nola!” or, “We’re getting our Nola groove on tonight!” or, “We had some real Nola jambalaya for lunch!” or, “Our Uber driver was born in Nola. He told us to go to Joey-K’s.” —That’s nice.
Unlike your Uber driver, I don’t know anyone who lives here who goes to Joey-K’s for a good meal. Maybe I hang with the wrong crowd. Also, unlike your Uber driver, I don’t know anyone who refers to New Orleans as Nola. Unless we are talking about nola.com, nobody who lives here says Nola when they are talking about New Orleans. We just say, “New Orleans.” We love this city. We don’t need to be clever. You cannot abbreviate love and respect. When you abbreviate your roots you are left with nothing. Nothing from nothing leaves nothing and New Orleans is more than just something. New Orleans is a way of life.
Keep yourself in a New Orleans state of mind and you will be happy the rest of your days. Trust me. I live here. New Orleans has something that can be contagious, like a lover’s flu, or a hummingbirds song. When you are in a New Orleans state of mind, you’ll dream sweet dreams, even when you are awake. I know. I do it all the time.
Spend enough time in New Orleans and you’ll be spoiled to live anywhere else. New Orleans moves to its own rhythm, its own clock, its own calendar. New Orleans is what it is. New Orleans abides. No one ever says their visit to New Orleans is too long. It is always too short.
